Creating and Using Segments

Segments are an invaluable tool for parsing your audience into smaller cohorts based on a set of conditions like tags, fields, or engagement.

Table of Contents

Getting started

In order to create a segment, navigate to Audience > Segments > New Segment.

From there you can set the Segment Name and Description.

There are 2 main types of segments:

  1. Static segments are calculated once upon creation and are not otherwise recalculated. Static segments are useful if you don't want the contacts in a list to change or update later (for example: a segment of contacts who attended a specific event).
  2. Dynamic segments update frequently (including right before you send a newsletter) to ensure every contact who meets the segment conditions is included in the audience.

Setting your segment conditions

Once you've made your selections, on the next screen you can define the conditions for your segment.

Understanding segment blocks

Segment blocks are combined into groups and groups can combine conditions as OR or AND.

For example, this block will build a segment of contacts that were created after a specific date AND have an open rate over 40%.

If the toggle at the top of the group was set to OR, it would pull contacts made after a certain date OR that have an open rate over 40%.

Similarly, segment groups can be combined with AND or OR operators.

For example, this segment builds a segment of contacts who were created after a certain date and have an open rate over 40% OR who have a click rate over 2% and use a gmail address.

Using segments

The most common use case for segment is when sending an email campaign. You can use segments to include or exclude contacts from an email send.

In addition, you can use segments to collect statistics about your list, perform bulk actions (such as tagging or unsubscribing), and to export.
